WAN PIPEL @ Trinidad + Tobago FF

September 15

The Surinamese/Dutch feature WAN PIPEL by director Pim de la Parra will be screened at the Trindidad + Tobago Film Festival (September 21 – October 4). The Festival screens a selection of the best films from Trinidad+Tobago and the Caribbean, the Caribbean Diaspora, and Latin American countries in the Caribbean Basin.

WAN PIPEL (1976) was the first Surinamese feature film after the country's independance. The film has been restored recently by EYE Film Institute Netherlands.

WAN PIPEL is about Roy, a young black Surinamese studying in Amsterdam. When he learns that his mother is dying, he borrows money from his Dutch girlfriend to return home. There he scandalises everyone when he begins a relationship with Rubia, a Hindu. Will Roy stay with Rubia and remain in his newly independent homeland, or will he follow his family’s wishes and return to Holland?

After the Trinidad + Tobago Film Festival WAN PIPEL wil also be screened at the African Diaspora International Film Festival in New York (November 25 – December 13) and Chicago (June 2012).

Other Dutch films that are presented at the Trinidad + Tobago Film Festival are SONNY BOY by Maria Peters en UNITED BY MUSIC by Michel Drenthe.
