Bilal Wahib is Dutch Shooting Star

9 January 2020

Dutch actor Bilal Wahib is selected for the European Shooting Stars event at the upcoming edition of the Berlin International Film Festival (20 February-1 March 2020). Bilal is one of the in total ten outstanding acting talents from Europe that have been chosen by an international jury to take part in the prestigious platform.

Only 20 years of age, Bilal Wahib from the Netherlands is this year's youngest Shooting Star, but already an old hand at acting. He started acting at 13 and this year already took on leading roles in two Dutch productions, among them Mees Peijnenburg's debut feature Paradise Drifters (2019), which will celebrate its international premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival in the Generation competition. Watching his performance the jury was "touched by his childlike gentleness, riveted by his raw ferocity, shaken up by his genuine fears".

Shooting Stars is organised by European Film Promotion for the 23rd time to cast a spotlight on the most talented, up-and-coming actresses and actors. During the four day event  (21 -24 February) they are presented to the international film industry, audience and press. The talents participate in a tailor-made programme, which gives them the opportunity to meet more than 80 casting directors, producers and filmmakers, laying the foundation for the professional network that is essential for the launch of an international acting carreer. The event culminates in the awards ceremony at the Berlinale Palast on Monday 24 February, where each of the actors are honoured with the European Shooting Star Award.

Previous Dutch Shooting Stars include Jonas Smulders (OPEN SEAS), Hannah Hoekstra (THE FURY), Reinout Scholten van Aschat (BEYOND SLEEP), Abbey Hoes (NENA), Marwan Kenzari (WOLF), Sylvia Hoeks (THE GIRL AND DEATH), Lotte Verbeek (NOTHING PERSONAL), Halina Reijn (BLACK BOOK) and Fedja van Huêt (CHARACTER).

The other Shooting Stars 2020 beside Bilal Wahib are: Martina Apostolova (Bulgaria), Victoria Carmen Sonne (Denmark), Pääru Oja (Estonia), Zita Hanrot (France), Levan Gelbakhiani (Georgia), Jonas Dassler (Germany), Bartosz Bielenia (Poland), Joana Ribeiro (Portugal) and Ella Rumpf (Switserland).
