Ellos son Gigantes | They are Giants
In the documentary short Ellos son Gigantes | They are Giants we enter the world of the miniature book. Ever since man could write, he has had the desire to shrink texts. Such tiny books were regarded as master pieces by printers and compositors, and binders did the rest.
For more than thirty years Guus Thurkow, together with his wife Luce, has run an antiquarian bookshop. They also had a small publishing company, the ‘Catharijne Press’. Their love of the miniature book dates back to those days, when trading in them was their main source of income. Guus and Luce have now retired from the book and publishing trade, which enabled them to fulfil their wish of building a miniature library for their private collection of miniature books. After three years of hard work this absolutely unique project is now finished. Certainly, there are larger collections, such as that of Charlotte Smith in the library of the University of Iowa, which contains 3000 titles. Other fine collections are those of the Bodleian in Oxford, the Grolier Club in New York and the Huntington Library in California. But there is no other building like the Bibliotheca Thurkowiana Minor.
