The Trial wins Audience Award Berlinale
27 February 2018
During the official awards ceremony of the Berlinale last Sunday, The Trial (O Processo) directed by Maria Ramos was given the 3rd place Panorama Audience Award in the Dokumente section. The Brazilian feature-length documentary was co-produced by the Dutch company Conijn Film. After its premier at the festival the film received a lengthy standing ovation and has now fittingly received the audience award.
The Trial is an uncompromising documentary about the impeachment of Dilma Rousseff, Brazil’s first female President. The film portrays the trial at the senate focusing on the President’s defense team: her lawyer and three senators who struggle to prove her innocence against a majority vote by a Congress riddled with corruption.
Half-Brazilian and half-Dutch Maria Ramos already directed several award winning documentaries on Brazil’s judicial system and its complicated political situation: Justice (2004) which was awarded with a.o. the Grand Prix at Visions du Reel International Documentary Film Festival and the Amnesty Award at CPH: Dox, Behave (2007) that received a.o. the Grand Prix at One World and Fipresci Award at Dok-Leipzig and Hill of Pleasure (2013) for which Ramos was awarded Best Director at Brasilia Film Fest.
