The Price of Sugar reaches Golden status

Feature film The Price of Sugar has reached the status of Golden Film. More than 100.000 tickets have been sold already since the film’s release in Dutch cinemas on September 26.
The film is directed and written by by Jean van de Velde and produced by PV Pictures (NL) and Cool Beans (NL) in co-production with Comet Film (DE) and Muscle Productions (SA).
The Price of Sugar tells the story of two young women in eighteenth-century Suriname, the white Sarith and her slave Mini Mini. As Sarith becomes embittered by her hard life in the colony, Mini Mini is offered her own chance at happiness. But can she dare to take it at the expense of her mistress?
The Price of Sugar was de official opening film of this year's Netherlands Film Festival. 2013 marks the 150th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in the former Dutch colonies.
The Golden/Platinum/Diamond Film Award is awarded when the number of tickets sold after a film’s release is 100.000, 400.000, and 1.000.000 respectively. The prize is an initiative presented by the Netherlands Film Festival and the Netherlands Film Fund since 2001 and is intended to encourage the Dutch film industry and motivate the general public to go and see Dutch films.
