The Paradise Suite Dutch Oscar entry

September 7, 2015

Dutch feature film The Paradise Suite, written and directed by Joost van Ginkel, has been chosen as the official entry from the Netherlands for Academy Award in the Best Foreign Language Film category.

With an international cast that includes Issaka Sawadogo (The Invader), Anjela Nedyalkova (Avé), Magnus Krepper (The Bridge), Raymond Thiry (Between 10 and 12) and Dragan Bakema (Brownian Movement), The Paradise Suite world premieres at the upcoming of International Film Festival Toronto (September 10 - 20) in Discovery section.

In the film, the lives of six people, who seem to have nothing more in common than their faraway homelands, become inextricably linked in Amsterdam, the city they have chosen as their new home. The Paradise Suite is a profound and lyrical reflection on human resilience in the face of ongoing evil within 21st Century Europe.

For the beautiful young Bulgarian JENYA, her journey to Amsterdam turns out to be the opposite of what she hoped for. Her gruelling captivity forces the angelic African, YAYA, to fight for her freedom - a dangerous fight in which he seems set to lose everything but his beloved faith. The Serbian war criminal IVICA, who has just become a father, is painfully confronted with the fact that crimes never go unpunished. Bosnian SEKA has nothing left to live for except her vengeance but, as it turns out, it's that same vengeance that brings love back in her life. And when the Swedish piano-wonder boy, LUKAS, runs away from his new temporary home, his father STIG finally realizes that their mutual passion for music is damaging their relationship.

Joost van Ginkel's first feature 170 HZ (2011), about two deaf teenagers, and using mostly sign language, had its international premiere at the Busan International Film Festival and won, among others, the Golden Calf Audience Award at the Netherlands Film Festival. He previously directed the short film Sand (2008) which premiered at the Venice International Film Festival and won thirteen international awards.

Dutch production companies PRPL and Bastide Films produced the The Paradise Suite in co-production with GötaFilm, Film Väst (Sweden) and KaBoAl Pictures (Bulgary), with the support of the Netherlands Film Fund, the Netherlands Film Production Incentive, Eurimages, the Swedish Film Institute and the Bulgarian National Film Center. Media Luna New Films handles international sales.

The nominations in all categories for the Academy Awards will be announced on January 14, 2016. The 88th Oscars Ceremony will take place February 28.
