Sylvia Hoeks receives Shooting Star award at Berlinale

Monday night the SHOOTING STARS 2011 received the SHOOTING STARS Award on stage at the Berlinale Palast. Among them talented Dutch actress Sylvia Hoeks (picture above: standing 3rd from left).

The awards were given to ten of the most promising young actors in Europe, chosen by a high-profile jury of film industry professionals as the SHOOTING STARS of 2011 concluded a whirlwind weekend of events at the Berlin International Film Festival with photo-sessions, casting director meetings, press conference, a glittering award ceremony and gala reception.

Sylvia Hoeks graduated from Theatre School Maastricht and acted on the stage in various plays and appeared in several TV series. She gained wide audience recognition after her role in the feature film DUSKA, for which she was awarded a Golden Calf at the Netherlands Film Festival 2007. She received the Silver Dolphin for Best Actress in Setubal, Portugal, for her role in THE STORM (2009), and this year she has been the lead actress in TIRZA, the Dutch entry for the Oscars 2011.

In January 2011 Sylvia can be seen with Kees Hulst in DRACULA, the new play by Swedish theatre director Jakop Ahlbom. This spring Sylvia will start shooting for the fiction feature film DE BENDE VAN OSS, for which she is the main actress and in autumn she will take the lead role in the international co-production THE GIRL AND DEATH by Jos Stelling.

Previous Dutch Shooting Stars are Lotte Verbeek (NOTHING PERSONAL, THE THRONE), Halina Reijn (BLACK BOOK, NADINE) and Fedja van Huêt (CHARACTER, NIGHT RUN).

The Shooting Stars Award was handed out by jury member Heike Makatsch (German Shooting Star 2001) and renowned British actor Ralph Fiennes welcomed the ten actors onto the Berlinale Palast stage to receive the SHOOTING STARS Award – donated by Studio Babelsberg, to celebrate their recent achievements. During a dinner with VIP's from the film industry the SHOOTING STARS have been presented with the Supernova, twinkling jewellery symbolizing an exploding star, representing the ten young actors bursting onto the world's stage. Co-partner TESiRO provide these gifts as a memory of a weekend in the limelight.

Shooting Stars is an initiative of European Film Promotion and aims to internationally highlight young European actors and actresses.  During the Berlin International Film Festival, a lot of  attention will be given to the potential international carreers of the Shooting Stars and they will be presented to leading filmmakers, the world press and important international casting directors.
