Super and Stand by Me submitted to Academy Awards

September 2, 2013

Short fiction film Stand-by Me and short animated film Super have been selected by an independent committee of Dutch film professionals to be submitted to the Academy Awards in the categories Best Live Action Short Film and Best Animated Short Film.

Stand-by Me is directed by Martijn de Jong and produced by ALP (Aiss Leeksma Pictures) in co-production with the NTR.

De Jong has worked as a creative director at advertising agencies and has won several international awards and nominations. His newest film Stand-by Me will have its premiere at the upcoming edition of Netherlands Film Festival in September 2013.

Stand-by Me is about retired Willem who is behaving strangely these days. Instead of spending quality time with his long-suffering wife Johanna, he insists on showing her how to use all the electrical appliances around the house. Especially the remote control. A short tragicomedy about enjoying the small things in life.

Super is directed by Johan Klungel and produced by Lawson & Whatshisname and The Drawing Room.

In 2004 Klungel graduated at the Minerva Academy in Groningen with his first animated short: Fauna Sutra, that won several awards including the third prize at the Tribeca Film Festival, New York. Since then he has been working as a freelance animator and illustrator, doing many different assignments for print, television and internet. In 2012 he finished his latest short Super.

The main character in Super, Albert, gets lost in the seductive world of pretty packages. When his frivolous fantasy turns into a nightmare he discovers a different world behind the facade of the supermarket.

September 17, 18 and 19, 2013 both films will be shown at the Laemmle Royal Theatre, 11523 Santa Monica Boulevard, Los Angeles
Super (10 minutes) from 12:05 PM till 12:35 PM
Stand-by Me (9 minutes) from 12:35 PM till 1:10 PM

On January 16, 2014, the nominations for the Academy Awards will be announced in all categories. The Oscars ceremony will be held on March 2, 2014.
