Soldier on the Roof wins two awards IDFA
26 November 2012
Dutch documentary Soldier on the Roof, directed by Esther Hertog, has won both the IDFA Award for First Appearance ( € 5,000) and the Dioraphte IDFA Award for Dutch Documentary (€ 5,000). The film is produced by Sarphati Media in coproduction with VPRO television.
Comments from the Jury for First Appearance: “In a conflict that unfortunately is more current than ever, the filmmaker takes a unique, seemingly innocent and lighthearted path to talk about the daily life of Jewish settlers, and their belief system, which in turn sheds light on the lives of the Palestinians surrounding them.” And the Jury for Dutch Competition stated: “The film captures the absurdity of choices where logic and reality are overtaken by dogma and entrenched hatred.”
Soldier on the Roof offers a glimpse into the daily life of a Jewish enclave in Hebron, where 800 colonists live among their 120,000 Palestinian neighbours.
The International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) took place November 14 - 25, 2012.
