Six Dutch Documentaries at Hotdocs 2018

The Dutch documentary industry is well represented at the 25th anniversary edition of Hotdocs festival in Toronto with six productions in selection.

The End of Fear* by Barbara Visser will have its premier on the American continent in the Artscapes program of Hotdocs. The essayistic documentary shows the many complex dimensions to Barnett Newman’s painting Who’s Afraid of Red, Yellow and Blue III and its infamous restauration. The film is produced by De Familie Film & TV and co-produced by Amstelfilm –both Dutch outfits.

More Human Than Human*, directed by Femke Wolting and Tommy Pallotta, and co-produced by Submarine (NL), will see its international premier in the Special Presentations section. The film investigates the growing importance of smart technology in our daily lives, showing both the possibilities and dangers of artificial intelligence.

In Ubiquity* veteran filmmaker Bregtje van der Haak gives a voice to ‘digital refugees’ who have fled from the nearly inescapable networks that have pervaded the modern world. The film is produced by BALDR Film and will have its world premier in the International Spectrum program. 

Dutch minority co-production Ceres, directed by Janet van den Brand, will have its North American premier in the World Showcase section of Hot Docs. The film is produced by the Belgian production company Diplodokus and co-produced by the Dutch outfit Tangerine Tree. Ceres is a poetic portrait of four children growing up in the Dutch country side.

Director Daan Jongbloed made The Farmer during the course of eight years, trying to understand the 97-year old recluse Peer living in a ramshackle farm. The film is produced by Van Osch Films. The documentary will have its international premier in the Shorts competition.

Finally, The Last Chair by Jessie van Vreden and Anke Teunissen (produced by Pieter van Huystee Film) is selected for the new DocX program, a new competition showcasing interactive documentaries. The Last Chair offers an immersive experience, taking the spectator away from the rush of modern daily life and into the living rooms of two men at old age.
