Reinout Scholten van Aschat Shooting Star

December 15, 2015

Dutch actor Reinout Scholten van Aschat has been selected as Shooting Star for the 66th Berlin International Film Festival (February 11-21 2016). Reinout is one of ten highly gifted young actors selected from across Europe by a jury of acclaimed industry experts that include Danish casting director Rie Hedegaard (Dancer in the Dark) and Romanian actress Anamaria Marinca (4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days), herself a Shooting Star in 2008.

On the big screen Reinout Scholten van Aschat has featured in, among other films, Borgman (2013), The Heineken Kidnapping (2011) and Crusade in Jeans (2006). He received a Golden Calf for Best Actor at the Netherlands Film Festival for his role in The Heineken Kidnapping. Reinout plays the lead in Boudewijn Koole's Beyond Sleep, produced by KeyFilm, which is based on the iconic novel ‘Nooit meer slapen' by Willem Frederik Hermans (published by De Bezige Bij) and will have it's premiere as official opening film at the International Film Festival Rotterdam 2016.

On Reinout's performance in Beyond Sleep the Shooting Stars jury citation reads: "Often filmed all alone in Norway's Finnmark wilderness, Reinout affirms himself as the magnetic centre of the philosophical adventure story. In a riveting performance, he walks the delicate line between lucidity and madness."

The Shooting Stars talent platform, launched in 1997, is organized by European Film Promotion (EFP) and aims to highlight and promote Europe's best young acting talent. At the Berlinale, the ten Shooting Stars will participate in a specially curated weekend of profile-raising workshops and events with influential members of the International Casting Directors Network (ICDN) as well as film and television agents and filmmakers. In addition there will be extensive interviews and photo-shoots with international media. All the Shooting Stars will be presented with the Shooting Star Special Award during a red carpet ceremony at the Berlinale Palast.

The Shooting Stars initiative has launched the careers of some of today's most acclaimed European acting talent, including Daniel Craig, Alicia Vikander, Daniel Brühl, Rachel Weisz and Maisie Williams. Previous Dutch Shooting Stars include Abbey Hoes (Nena), Marwan Kenzari (Wolf), Sylvia Hoeks (The Girl and Death), Lotte Verbeek (Nothing Personal), Halina Reijn (Black Book) and Fedja van Huêt (Character).

The nine other European Shooting Stars of 2016 are: Martha Canga Antonio (Belgium), Tihana Lazovic (Croatia), Lou de Laâge (France), Jella Haase (Germany), Daphné Patakia (Greece), Atli Óskar Fjalarsson (Iceland), Sara Serraiocco (Italy), María Valverde (Spain) and Kacey Mottet Klein (Switzerland).

The 2016 Shooting Stars jury members are: Italian producer Marta Donzelli (Sworn Virgin), Greek film director Constantine Giannaris (Man at Sea), German film editor and critic Tobias Kniebe (Sueddeutsche Zeitung), Danish casting director Rie Hedegaard (Dancer in the Dark) and actress Anamaria Marinca (4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days), Romanian Shooting Star 2008.
