(Otto) off to the Oscars

4 September 2015

Dutch animated short (OTTO), by Job, Joris & Marieke, off to the Oscars®

Short animated film (OTTO), directed by Job, Joris & Marieke, has been selected by an independent committee of Dutch film professionals for Oscar® submission in the Animated Short Film category.

The Dutch committee were impressed by the film’s unique handling of a universal theme, the originality of the story and the very high degree of craftsmanship employed in its telling.

It is the second film by Job, Joris & Marieke to be submitted for consideration to the Academy. Their animated short A SINGLE LIFE received an Oscar® nomination in the Best Animated Short Film category (2015).

(Otto) will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF, 10-20 September 2015) where it is selected for the Short Cuts International Competition. Last year, A Single Life also premiered at TIFF.

In (Otto) a woman who is unable to have children steals the imaginary friend of a little girl, and keeps this a secret from her husband…

(Otto) was produced, directed, written and animated by Job, Joris & Marieke who consist of: Job Roggeveen (1979), Joris Oprins (1980) and Marieke Blaauw (1979), all graduates of the Design Academy in Eindhoven. In 2007 they founded the Job, Joris & Marieke studio where they have produced numerous corporate and commercial films, as well as a host of personal projects. Last year, they received international acclaim for their Oscar® nominated animated short A Single Life. Before that, they won various (international) prizes with their short film Mute (2013) and helped developing the animated TV-series The Tumblies (2012).

The film was established under KORT!, a joint project of the NTR, Dutch Film Fund and the Media Fund, with support from the CoBO. The aim is to jointly stimulate the production of Dutch short films.

EYE International organizes the Dutch short film selections, the qualifying run of (Otto) in Los Angeles and oversees its submission to the Academy. On 14 January 2016 the Academy will announce the nominees in all categories, including those for Animated Short Film category. The Oscars® will be presented on February 28, 2016.
