Dutch Live Action short NIGHTSHADE by Shady El-Hamus off to the Academy Awards
Short Live Action film NIGHTSHADE by Shady El-Hamus, produced by The Rogues, has been selected by an independent committee of Dutch film professionals for Oscar® submission in the Live Action Short Film category.
The film will have its international première in September at the Oscar-qualifying Bristol Encounters Film Festival (UK). The film will also screen at the Netherlands Film Festival and the Elgouna Film Festival (Egypt), among others.
In NIGHTSHADE young Tarik (11) helps his father Elias to transport illegal immigrants into the Netherlands. When an accident occurs, Tarik gains the acknowledgment from his father he has yearned for, but at a high price – the loss of his own innocence.
Shady El-Hamus (Amsterdam, 1988) graduated in 2012 at the Netherlands Film & Television Academy as director and screenwriter, with two films: MAGNESIUM (screenwriter) and ABOUT SONS (screenwriter/director). MAGNESIUM was selected for the Sundance Film Festival (US) and several other leading film festivals. In 2015, Shady El-Hamus completed a Masters course in Directing at the National Film and Television School in Beaconsfield (UK). His graduation film FAIRUZ premiered at the Dubai International Film Festival.
NIGHTSHADE is produced by The Rogues. The film was realized with financial support of the Netherlands Film Fund and the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts.
EYE International organizes the Dutch short film selections, the qualifying run of NIGHTSHADE in Los Angeles and oversees its submission to the Academy. On 23 January 2018, the Academy will announce the nominees in all categories, including those for Best Live Action Short Film. The Oscars® will be presented on March 4, 2018.
