My Fathers Choice
The small-scale story of the family of director Yan Ting Yuen told within the large-scale context of China's history, and the diaspora of its people.
Yan Ting Yuen links the personal history of her father and his family to the major developments of the past fifty years within China: the Great Famine in the fifties, the Cultural Revolution in the sixties, the exodus to the West in the seventies, and the China of today as the greatest economic power in the world. A story unfolds in which the relationship between the individual and the collective, the personal history and the global history, is defined by continuous friction.
