Last Friday Dutch documentary film MEET THE FOKKENS, directed by Gabriëlle Provaas & Rob Schröder, was awarded with a Cristal Film. The film reached the status of Cristal Film for more than 10.000 tickets sold, since its theatrical release in the Netherlands on December 1, 2011. It was the second Dutch documentary to reach the Cristal Film status in the year 2011.

MEET THE FOKKENS is produced by Submarine in co-production with VPRO and is a Teledoc, a collaboration of the CoBO Fund, the Dutch Film Fund and NPO (Dutch Public Broadcasting). The film is distributed in the Netherlands by A-Film Distribution.

The film tells the life stories of prostitute twin sisters Martine and Louise Fokkens, who have been in the business for 50 years. The film provides a sometimes hilarious, sometimes distressing peek into the world of paid love.

MEET THE FOKKENS had its world premiere at IDFA and was well received by both the international and the national film press. The film did very well at Docs for Sale, the international film market at IDFA, selling to broadcasters in Israel, Sweden and Belgium, among others. Distributors in the United States and the United Kingdom already have indicated that they would like to release the film theatrically.

The Golden/Platinum/Diamond Film Award is an initiative presented by the Netherlands Film Festival and the Netherlands Film Fund since 2001. The prize is intended to encourage the Dutch film industry and motivate the general public to go and see Dutch films. The total number of tickets sold (100.000, 400.000 and 1.000.000) after a film’s release determines whether a prize is awarded. The cristal Film is awarded to a Dutch documentary with more than 10.000 tickets sold.
