Great week for Dutch films at NL cinemas

January 5, 2015

The Christmas holidays have been very successful for Dutch films at the national box office.

Dutch comedy Viper's Nest 2 has reached the status of Diamond Film for 1000.000 tickets sold since its official release in national cinemas on December 4. The last Dutch film that reached the Platinum status was the first Viper's Nest film in 2011. Viper's Nest 2 is, just as its prequel, directed by Will Koopman, written by Frank Houtappels and produced by Talpa Fictie and is about four girlfriends Claire, Cheryl, Anouk and Roelien, who live a bourgeois life.

Another big hit at the Dutch cinemas is the family film Mister Twister on Stage which has attracted 400.000 visitors already and reached the Platinum status. It is the third installment of the successful Mister Twister series, directed by Barbara Bredero, written by Tijs van Marle and produced by PV Productions. In Mister Twister on Stage the big end-of-term play is approaching. The class look forward to rehearsing in the afternoons and to making beautiful scenery – until they find out that the headmaster has chosen a terribly boring medieval play. But teacher Mees Kees puts his own twist on things…

Over 10.000 people went to the cinema for the documentary Around the World in 50 Concerts by Heddy Honigmann and produced by Cobos Films, reaching the Cristal status. After her documentaries Forever (2006) en El Olvido (2008) it is now the third time already that filmmaker Honigmann receives a Cristal Film. Around the World in 50 Concerts shows how 2013 the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra toured the whole world to celebrate its 125th anniversary: 50 concerts spread over 6 continents.

Christmas family film Wiplala has been awarded a Golden Film for more than 100.000 tickets sold. Wiplala, directed by Tim Oliehoek, written by Tamara Bos and produced by Bos Bros (NL) in co-production with Ciné Cri de Coeur (BE) and Samsa Film (LU), shows the adventure that begins when 10cm tall Wiplala accidentally transforms man-sized Blom, his daughter Nella Della and son Johannes into little people, also 10 cm tall.

The Golden/Platinum/Diamond Film Award is an initiative presented by the Netherlands Film Festival and the Netherlands Film Fund since 2001. The prize is intended to encourage the Dutch film industry and motivate the general public to go and see Dutch films. The total number of admissions (resp. 100.000, 400.000, 1.000.000) determines whether a prize is awarded. Dutch documentaries receive the Cristal Film for more than 10.000 tickets sold.
