Gerrit van Dijk retro @ Kaboom
Kaboom Animation Festival honours the Dutch grand master of animation with a comprehensive program.
Gerrit van Dijk (1938-2012) was an internationally renowned animator and artist with a diverse and highly original oeuvre that contained both indepent as well as commissioned works. The program, curated by Mette Peters, came about in collaboration with Eye Filmmuseum and contains eleven films from the Eye collection.
Among others the program contains Golden Bear winners Pas à deux (1988) and I Move, So I Am (1997). The latter is a poignant selfportrait of the artist, who draws himself in an uninterrupted line while he keeps moving constantly. The effect this and the rotoscope techinique he uses has on the viewer is almost magical. Pas à deux is a collaborative work by Van Dijk and Monique Renault and a dynamic dance trip through history. Two dance partners keep changing constantly into famous historical figures and cultural icons. Tarzan becomes entangled in a duet with Snow White and the Pope dances with Joan of Arc. Van Dijk drew the female figures, Renault the male ones.
Next to several other specials, Kaboom also showcases an elaborate selection from the last two decades of Dutch animation, presented in five themed programs: Dutch Animation is Diverse, Dutch Animation is Daring, Dutch Animation is Dazzeling, Dutch Animation is Disturbing and Dutch Animation is Distressing. The last program features the complete animated webseries Kinda Awkward by Aisha Madu.
Kaboom Animation Festival will take place fully online from March 31st – April 5th.
