A film that shows the Dutch Immigration Service’s stringent selection procedure for political asylum in The Netherlands
In 2008, more than 15,000 people applied for Dutch political asylum. Of these, 427 received refugee status. In this film we follow several "gatekeepers" as they go about their daily task of hearing the asylum seekers' stories. Seasoned and apparently unfazed, they hear accounts of violence, poverty, war, and other horrors. We hear how the Netherlands takes part in a European initiative for the resettlement of refugees, and a delegation also travels to Syria to select refugees on the border with Iraq.
