Dutch shorts selected for Sundance 2013

Two Dutch short films and one Dutch short co-production have been selected for the prestigious Sundance Film Festival. MAGNESIUM, directed by Sam de Jong and TODAY AND TOMORROW, directed by Aaron Douglas Johnston, both Netherlands Film and Television Academy projects, will be screening in the section International Narrative Short Films. OH WILLY, directed by Emma De Swaef and Marc James Roels, has been selected for the section Animated Short Films.

With MAGNESIUM Sam de Jong graduated from the Netherlands Film and Television Academy.The film won two prizes at the Netherlands Film Festival 2012 in the Graduation Competition: the award for Best Director and Best Scenario. The film tells the story of a young talented gymnast who discovers something that will change her life completely, just as she prepares for an important qualification tournament.

TODAY AND TOMORROW is a Netherlands Film and Television Academy project, directed by Aaron Douglas Johnston. In 2011 Aaron made his first feature length film BUMBLEFUCK, USA which premiered at the American film festivals Frameline and Outfest. In TODAY AND TOMORROW Iranian and Afghani political refugees make a life for themselves in Holland, anxiously awaiting word if they will be granted political asylum or sent back to their native countries.

Animated short film OH WILLY, directed by Emma De Swaef and Marc James Roels, is co-produced by Beast Animation (Belgium), Vivement Lundi (France), Polaris (France) and il Luster Productions (Netherlands). The film recently won the Cartoon d'Or 2012, the award for Best European Animation Short Film. In the film chubby Willy returns to the naturist community where he has spent his youth to visit his dying mother.

The festival takes place January 17-27 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Sundance, United States. The 2013 Short Film program is comprised of 65 short films selected from 8102 submissions.
