Dutch Selections at Visions Du Réel
14 March 2019
This year, eight Dutch documentaries have been selected for the International Documentary Film Festival of Nyon, Visions du Réel (Switzerland). The festival’s 50th edition starts this Friday and takes place until 13 April 2019.
Four Dutch films are selected in the Grand Angle category. Kabul, City in the Wind, directed by Aboozar Amini (prod. Silk Road Film Salon), will be competing. The film recently won the NEXT:WAVE Award at CPHDox. Other films in this section include Buddy, directed by Heddy Honigmann (prod. Appel&Honigmann), Sheep Hero by Ton van Zantvoort (prod. NEWTON Film) and Ring of Dreams by Willem Baptist, produced by Tangerine Tree.
Ring of Dreams will have its world premiere at the festival in the Grand Angle category, and follows Tengkwa, a man who tries to train a new generation of Dutch wrestlers. With slim chances of fame and glory, this documentary tells the story of fighting for your dreams against the odds of our dreary daily lives.
In the International Medium Length and Short Film Competition, three Dutch documentaries have been selected.
Daddy and the Warlord is directed by Clarice Gargard and Shamira Raphaëla and produced by De Familie Film & TV. The film tells the story of Clarice, who lives in post war-torn Liberia. Clarice has always loved her father, but when she is forced to evaluate his political legacy, she gets entangled in a web where good and evil are desperately interweaved. The film will have its international premiere at the festival.
Short documentary Toni and Bleri, directed and produced by Katja Verheul, will have its world premiere in this section. This story takes place in Kosovo, where two young men walk through an abandoned construction worksite. Toni and Bleri evoke memories of a scarcely joyful past, as well as their dream to leave the country in search of a better life.
In Above Us Only Sky, director and producer Arthur Kleinjan uses free association and incidental traces to blend characters and events into an original story, imbued with magical realism, created by reminiscing about a flight he once missed.
Lastly, the 1978 documentary Flat Jungle, directed by Johan van der Keuken, will screen in the Cinquante section. Van der Keuken shows us life on the Wadden Sea shores, and includes portraits of people whose lives have been fundamentally altered by the developments taking place in the area.
