Dutch Selections at Annecy 2019
29 May 2019
Several Dutch (co-) productions have been
selected for various sections of this year’s Annecy International
Animation Film Festival (France). The animation film festival takes
place 10-15 June 2019.
Buñuel in the Labyrinth of the Turtles, directed by Salvador Simo and produced by Signatia (ES) (co-produced by Submarine (NL)) has been selected for the Feature Films in Competition
category. The animated feature tells the story of how Luis Buñuel made
his controversial movie, and blends animation with real footage of the
original. Earlier this year, Buñuel in the Labyrinth of the Turtles won the Special Jury Prize at the Animation Is Film Festival in Los Angeles.
In the Short Films in Competition section, Intermission Expedition
will be competing, directed by Wiep Teeuwisse and produced by Valk
Productions. During a holiday, a group of tourists struggle with letting
go of their busy daily lives. When they finally do, they experience an
overwhelming sense of meaningless – but also a sense of universal beauty
within the here and now.
Tom van Gestel and Mascha Halberstad’s Fox & Hare – Birthday, co-produced by Submarine, will be competing in the TV Films in Competition
section. In this episode, Fox dreams of giving Hare the most exquisite
birthday ever, but a few pesky neighbors are out to spoil his plans.
In the Commissioned Films in Competition section Fraude – Dieselgate
has been selected, directed by Roman Klochkov and Anna Heuninck and
produced by the Erasmus University Rotterdam. The animated short
explains the so-called “Dieselgate” scandal, when Volkswagen tampered
with their vehicles to feign better emission performances in testing
environments, which came to light in 2015.
Flow by Adriaan Lokman (produced by Valk Productions) has been selected for the Short Films section. For this section, four directors have been invited to showcase and talk about their film. Flow
focuses on the central thread that runs through all our daily lives and
our entire existence, the most vital element of all: air.
In The Big Sleep category, the late Dutch artist Rosto will be honored by screening two of his animated shorts: Reruns (2018) and Jona/Tomberry (2005). This category is dedicated to commemorating filmmakers who have passed away recently.
