4th Dutch Filmweek in Havana

For the 4th time a Dutch Filmweek is being held in Havana, Cuba. This 4th edition (4ta Semana de Cine Holandés) takes place from May 17 -25, 2013. The Dutch Filmweek is organized by the Cuban Filminstitute (ICAIC), in collaboration with the Cinemateca de Cuba, the Dutch Embassy and EYE International.
The festival opens with the screening of THE MARATHON, directed by Diederick Koopal. The cities of Rotterdam (where the film THE MARATHON takes place) and Havana are celebrating their 30- year-old sister bond this year. Screenwriter and actor Martin van Waardenburg will be attending the opening and on Friday May 17th he will give a workshop to Cuban filmstudents in Havana.
The 4th Dutch Filmweek pays homage to Dutch - Surinamese filmmaker Pim de la Parra. His recently restored and digitalized film WAN PIPEL (UN PUEBLO) will be screened on Saturday May 18th, together with PARRADOX by In-Soo Radstake, a documentary about the filmmaker. De la Parra will be attending both screenings. On Monday May 20th he will give a lecture to Cuban filmstudents on “Low budget filmmaking in the Caribbean”.
Special attention will be given this year to sports. Besides the openingfilm THE MARATHON, the festival is organizing a special evening dedicated to sportsdocumentaries. JOHAN CRUIJFF, EN UN MOMENTO DADO by Ramon Gieling will be screened and a short documentary by John Appel, made in 2012 for Dutch Public Broadcasting: THE LAST FIGHT OF ARNOLD VANDERLEYDE. This film tells the story of Dutch boxing champion Arnold Vanderleyde, who meets his Cuban rival and multiple Olympic champion Felix Savon in Havana, 20 years after his last fight. Felix Savon will be attending the screening in Havana.
Furthermore the Filmweek presents a number of successful Dutch films that have not been screened in Cuba before: KAUWBOY by Boudewijn Koole, TAPED by Diederik van Rooijen, RABAT by Jim Taihuttu and Victor Ponten, SÜSKIND by Rudolf van den Berg and NYNKE, EEN LIEFDESGESCHIEDENIS by Pieter Verhoeff. And a few documentaries I AM A WOMAN NOW by Michiel van Erp and El SONIO DEL BANDONEÓN by Jiska Rickels.
