Dutch films selected for Norwegian IFF
16 August 2019
Three Dutch (co-)productions have been selected for the 47th edition of the Norwegian International Film Festival in Haugesund.
Steven Wouterlood's debut feature film My Extraordinary Summer With Tess, produced by BIND (sales: Picture Tree International) will be presented in the Cinemagi programme. The family film had its world premiere in the Generation programme of the Berlinale and has been selected for several international film festivals since, including the Zlin International Film Festival for Children and Youth where it won the Golden Slipper for Best Feature Film and the Kristiansand International Children's Film Festival where it was chosen Best Film by the Children's Jury. In My Extraordinary Summer With Tess 10-year-old Sam, who is afraid of being alone, meets the eccentric Tess while on vacation. Tess has an ingenious plan to get to know her father, who doesn't know that she is his daughter, and asks Sam for help. The problem is, they only have one week to achieve this.
Another Dutch family film which has been selected for the Cinemagi programme is Dennis Bots' Secrets of War, which celebrated its world premiere at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival and has been presented at many film festivals worldwide, including the Chicago International Children's Film Festival where the Adult Jury awarded the film with the first prize, Buster Copenhagen and Cinekid in Amsterdam. Secrets of War, produced by Rinkel Film and Bijker Film & TV (sales: Sola Media), tells the story of two friends, Tuur and Lambert (12), during the German occupation who use the war as inspiration for their exciting cave-war games. However, all of this changes when they meet Maartje, a Jewish girl who joins their class, and when Tuur's father joins the resistance while Lambert's father is a member of the Dutch fascist party.
The Dutch minority co-production Stupid Young Heart is included in the Nordic Focus programme. The film, directed by Selma Vilhunen and co-produced by the Dutch company Windmill Film (sales: The Yellow Affair), world premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year and also screened at the Berlin International Film Festival in the Generation competition among otehrs. Stupid Young Heart is a coming-of-age drama about two suburban teenagers who unexpectedly have to deal with the grown-up problems of pregnancy, while extreme right wing ideas begin to encroach on their multicultural neighborhood.
The Norwegian International Film Festival Haugesund will take place from the 17th until the 23rd of August.
