Dutch films off to Vancouver

24 September 2020

Two Dutch films and one minority co-production have been selected for the Vancouver International Film Festival, which kicks off 24 September.

Director Janis Rafa’s first feature film Kala Azar, produced by SNG Film, will screen in Vancouver's Panorama/Contemporary World Cinema programme. Kala Azar world premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in January, where it won the KNF Award, presented by the Circle of Dutch Film Journalists. The film has since been selected by numerous other prestigious festivals, including the Hong Kong International Film Festival, where it received a Special Mention – Young Cinerma Competition, the New Directors/New Films New York and Crossing Europe-Linz International Film Festival.

Kala Azar, is about a young couple, living at the margins of a city somewhere in the south of Europe. They collect deceased pets from people’s homes to take them to a pet crematorium. In this desolate environment, the couple’s stoic perseverance creates a space through which their love grows until the moment they have a car accident and cause a roadkill…

Dutch feature documentary My Rembrandt by Oeke Hoogendijk and produced by Discours Film, is part of Vancouver’s Music, Art and Design programme section. The documentary had its world premiere at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam 2019 and has also screened at CPH:DOX.

My Rembrandt provides a unique and intimate peek into the exclusive world of the Old Masters. It portrays the battle over Rembrandt’s legacy and shares a glimpse into private collectors intimate relationship with their very own Rembrandt.

Lastly, the Dutch minority co-production Another Round, directed by Thomas Vinterberg and co-produced by Netherlands-based Topkapi Films, is included in VIFF’s Panorama. Another Round has received Cannes Official Selection 2020 label and has also been selected for Toronto and San Sebastian among others.

Another Round is about the theory that we should all have a certain amount of alcohol in our blood, which could open our minds to the world around us, diminishing our problems and increasing our creativity. Martin and his three friends start an experiment to uphold a constant level of intoxication to escape everyday life.

The 39th Vancouver International Film Festival takes place from 24 September – 7 October: https://www.viff.org/Online/

The above mentioned films have been supported by the Netherlands Film Fund.
