Dutch Docs at Kasseler DokFest
Five Dutch shorts and two feature documentaries have been selected for this year’s hybrid edition of Kasseler Dokfest that will take place from November 17-22.
A Demonstration by Beny Wagner and Sasha Litvintseva, a co-procuction between Sasha Litvintseva (UK), Video Power (NL) and CaSk Films (DE), had it ‘s world premiere at the Berlinale Shorts 2020 and has been successful at festival circuit ever since with selections for among others Curtocircuito International Film Festival and Vancouver Film Festival. The film is described as a “monster film with no monsters” and inspired by “the existence of taxonomies of monsters at the heart of Early Modern European science, exploring and reinterpreting our way of seeing the natural world that is almost impossible to imagine from today’s vantage point.”
All, or Nothing at All by Amsterdam based artists Margit Lukács and Persijn Broersen was shown at Rencontres Berlin, Vancouver Film Festival and The Netherlands Film Festival. Their characteristic use of video game techniques and digital photography to create an almost post-apocalyptic landscape combined with the angelic re-interpretation of Frank Sinatra’s song All or Nothing at All by Danish singer Nina Vadshølt Vadshølt creates both beauty and uncanniness.
Marieke van der Lippe’s The Machine, Babeth M. VanLoo’s Arnold Schwarzenegger - The Art of Bodybuilding and Testfilm#1 by Telcosystems all had their world premiere at IFFR 2020 in the Bright Future Shorts section.
Testfilm#1 is a reflection on the process of digital film making and projection. Artist collective Telcosystems explores the creative possibilities of the Digital Cinema Package (DCP) – the new global projection system for cinemas that has replaced the analogue infrastructure. Testfilm#1 is a co-production between Spatial Media Laboratories (NL) and Bonobostudios (HR) and was also screened FeKK Ljubljana Short Film Festival, 25 FPS Festival in Zagreb and Curtocircuito International Film Festival.
About the The Machine; in the original radio play Die Maschine (1968) Goethe's poem Wanderer's Nightsong is systematically analyzed in an attempt to get to know the mechanics of poetry. Sound artist, composer and sound designer Radboud Mens made a contemporary adaptation parallel to the original. The Machine is not only a tribute to the original piece by George Perec, it makes this German play international.
Arnold Schwarzenegger - The Art of Bodybuilding is a new work made by Babeth VanLoo in collaboration with Eye Filmmuseum, consisting of unprocessed, original 16mm material which she shot of Arnold Schwarzenegger during the Mr. Olympia Bodybuilding contest in the 1970s and footage of an interview with him by Raymond Mondini. The work is on a successful festival run that includes a nomination for the Found Footage Award at IFFR, selections for among others the Silvestre Competition at IndieLisboa 2020 the International Competition Kurzfilm Festival Hamburg, Bucharest international Experimental Film Festival and International Frauenfilmfestival Dortmund.
Feature-length documentary Lost In Memories (Wei)*), directed by Ruud Lenssen, will screen in the DokfestGeneration-section. The film had its world premiere at IDFA 2019. Lost in Memories is not only an intimate film about dementia and care, but also a loving story about the impermanence of life.
Furthermore, Dutch minority co-production Songs of Repression*) by Estephan Wagner & Marianne Hougen-Moraga (NL prod: Viking Film) is also selected for DokfestGeneration.
