BORGMAN wins at European Film Festival Serbia
July 20, 2013
Dutch feature film Borgman by director Alex van Warmerdam has won the competition at the European Film Festival in Serbia (July 13 – 19). Van Warmerdam received the most important prize of the festival, the Golden Tower Award for the Best Film.
A total of 13 European films competed in the Official Selection for the Golden Tower Award. The jury praised Borgman for being “a powerful, brave and unique film, beautifully directed, and with an unexpected and surrealistic twist, that shows an anti-establishment finger to society which leaves us wanting to answer the unanswered.”
Alex van Warmerdam’s eighth feature film has been very successful since its world premiere in Cannes, where it was the first Dutch feature film selected for the Competition in almost 40 years. The film has already been sold to dozens of countries, among which the United States. Borgman is produced by Graniet Film, international sales are handled by Fortissimo Films.
Borgman is the central character in Alex van Warmerdam’s dark, malevolent fable. Is he a dream or a demon, a twisted allegory or an all-too-real embodiment of our fears? Borgman is a sinister arrival in the sealed-off streets of modern suburbia. His presence unleashes a crowing gallery of distortion around the careful façade constructed by an arrogant, comfortable couple, their three children and nanny.
