Van Heusden in Cinefondation Atelier
4 March 2019
Director Jaap van Heusden’s film project In Alaska (produced by IJswater Films) has been selected for the 15th edition of the Cinefondation L’Atelier, which takes place at the 72nd Cannes Film Festival (from 14 to 25 May). The workshop was created in 2005 to stimulate creative filmmaking and encourage the emergence of a new generation of filmmakers.
In total 15 feature projects from 15 different countries have been selected to participate in the 15th Cinéfondation’s Atelier. L’Atelier provides its participants access to international co-productions and the film directors together with their producers will be able to meet potential partners, a necessary step to finish their project and start the making of their film, thus accelerating the film’s completion.
In Alaska is Jaap van Heusden’s fourth feature after Win/Win (2010, winner Prix Geneva Europe Script Award), The New World (2013, Emmy Award Best Actress Bianca Krijgsman) and In Blue (2017, awards include Golden Calves for Best Director and Best Script at the Netherlands Film Festival). All are produced by IJswater Films.
In Alaska tells the story of Woody, a seventeen year old boy from a tiny village in Alaska, who is so depressed he wants to end his life. Instead he does something epically stupid: he shoots the oil pipeline that crosses the state and overnight becomes a most wanted criminal, hunted by special agent Susan Tarheel. While he has to run for his life, he’s learning for the first time what it truly means to be alive.
