Selected for Cannes

Films from the Netherlands at the Cannes film festival

R U THERE by David Verbeek is selected for Un Certain Regard. David Verbeek's first film, BEAT, which he produced himself, was selected by the IFFR, and his full-length feature SHANGHAI TRANCE was selected for the Tiger Competition of the 2008 IFFR.
RU THERE is produced by IDTV Film and the VPRO in co-production with Petites Lumières (France). International sales is by Films Boutique.
R U THERE was filmed in Taiwan, and features a young professional gamer, played by Stijn Koomen (STAGES), who travels around the world to play in videogame competitions. The real world holds no appeal for him; he lives his life in virtual reality, where he is fully in control. When he witnesses a serious accident in the street, his life is shaken up and he begins to doubt the certainties of his existence. R U THERE is a film about the first global generation of youngsters whose lives are dominated by virtual reality. A film about the children of Google, YouTube and Second Life.

OVER YOUR CITIES GRASS WILL GROW by Sophie Fiennes is presented Out of Competition in the Special Screenings programme.
The film is produced by Kasander Film, co-producers are Sciapode (France) and Amoeba (UK).
For producer Kees Kasander it is the 10th time that he has a film at the Cannes festival, previous selections include in 1988, DROWNING BY NUMBERS by Peter Greenaway and last year FISH TANK by Andrea Arnold, which won the Jury Prize.
OVER YOUR CITIES GRASS WILL GROW bears witness the German artist Anselm Kiefer's alchemical creative processes and renders as a film journey the personal universe he has built at his hill studio estate in the South of France.

Two minority films are selected for the festival. MY JOY by Sergei Loznitsa is selected for Competition, Dutch co-producer is Lemming Film. Other international co-productions previously produced by Lemming Film include ALTIPLANO (selected for the 2009 edition of the Semaine de la Critique) and KHADAK (selected for a.o Sundance 2007).
YOU MY JOY is a story about a few days in the life of truck driver Georgi which seems to be a never-ending nightmare, a spiral of violence and abuses of power.

ADRIENN PÁL by Ágnes Kocsis is screening in Un Certain Regard, Dutch co-producer is Isabella Films. Isabella Films produced this year's shortlisted Best Foreign Language film WINTER IN WARTIME and several co-productions including DOGVILLE and DANCER IN THE DARK.
ADRIENN PÁL is about an alienated nurse whose life is surrounded by death sets off to find her long-lost childhood friend and while tracing her recollections, she embarks on a paradox-filled voyage within her own memory and the memory of those she encounters.

Previously was announced that Urszula Antoniak's second feature film project CODE BLUE is selected for the sixth edition of the Cinfondation Atelier. Antoniak's debut film NOTHING PERSONAL was honored with many awards including six awards at the 62nd Locarno Film Festival and was very successful in the Dutch arthouse cinema.
CODE BLUE is a co-production produced by IDTV Film and a psychological thriller about Marian, who is barely capable of making (intimate) contact with other people. Her increasingly desperate efforts to this, finally push her to the extreme.
