David Verbeek project selected for Busan

18 September 2012

DEAD & BEAUTIFUL, the new feature project by David Verbeek, was selected for the Asian Project Market 2012, part of the 17th Busan International Film Festival. Thirty projects got selected for the Asian Project Market 2012, with DEAD & BEAUTIFUL being one of the 'global projects with limitless potential' and the only European project selected.

The film shows a group of young Shanghai elite, who start turning into vampires. Initially their exclusiveness covers up their dark new nature. However the real threat to the continuation of their lifestyle lies within themselves. Jealousy, vanity and lust threaten to expose them to the outside world. As a homicide detective draws closer, within the group two lovers seek to free themselves of the bloodlust and find peace.

David Verbeek's previous films SHANGHAI TRANCE (2008) and CLUB ZEUS (2011) were selected for the International Film Festival Rotterdam. SHANGHAI TRANCE received a Tiger Award nomination and was released in cinemas in China. CLUB ZEUS received the Return of the Tiger Award. His feature film RU THERE (2010) was selected for Un Certain Regard at Cannes and received five Golden Calf nominations at the Netherlands Film Festival. DEAD & BEAUTIFUL is David Verbeek’s fifth feature film, he is currently working on the film script.

DEAD & BEAUTIFUL is produced by Lemming Film in co-production with Les Petits Lumières (China / France). The film has been partly developed with support from the Netherlands Film Fund. The recordings will take place in Shanghai in 2013 and the film is expected to be released in Chinese cinemas in 2013.

The Busan International Film Festival takes place from 4 October to 13 October 2012 in South-Korea.
