A Gentle Creature and Lejla to Cannes

April 13, 2017

Sergei Loznitsa's A GENTLE CREATURE has been selected for the Official Selection at the 70th Cannes Film Festival. The film is co-produced by Marc van Warmerdam from Graniet Film and Peter Warnier from Wild at Art.

Inspired by Dostoyevsky's short story, Sergei Loznitsa leads us into the land of crime without punishment - a journey into the abyss. A woman lives alone on the outskirts of a village in Russia. One day she receives a parcel she sent to her incarcerated husband, marked ‘return to sender'. Shocked and confused, the woman has no choice but to travel to the prison in a remote region of the country in search of an explanation. So begins the story of a battle against this impenetrable fortress, the prison where the forces of social evil are constantly at work. Braving violence and humiliation, in the face of all opposition, our protagonist embarks on a blind quest for justice.

The film is produced by Marianne Slot and Carine Leblanc for Slot Machine (France). In coproduction with Wild at Art & Graniet Film (The Netherlands), Arte France cinema, GP cinema company(Russia), Looksfilm (Germany), Studio Uljana Kim (Lithuania), Solar Media Entertainment (Ukraine). In association with Wild Bunch, Haut et Court, Potemkine Films, Atoms & Void, Film Angels Studio.

Sergei Loznitsa, Ukrainian film maker, was born on September, 5th 1964. He grew up in Kiev, and in 1987 graduated from the Kiev Polytechnic with a degree in Applied Mathematics. For several years Sergei worked at the Kiev Institute of Cybernetics, specializing in artificial intelligence research. In 1997 Loznitsa graduated from the Russian State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) in Moscow, where he studied feature film making. Sergei Loznitsa has been making documentary films since 1996, and he has directed 17 award-winning documentaries. Loznitsa's feature debut MY JOY (2010) premiered at Cannes as well, and was followed by IN THE FOG (2012), which was also presented in the Competition of Cannes and received FIPRESCI prize.

Short film LEJLA by Dutch director Stijn Bouma is selected for Cannes Cinéfondation. LEJLA is one of the 16 films (from the 2,600 works submitted this year by film schools around the world) the Cinéfondation Selection has selected for its 20th anniversary.

LEJLA tells the story of a young woman from Sarajevo who feels stuck in her life, working in a fast food restaurant and taking care of her elderly father. When she falls in love with a young sailor, she must decide what's best for her future.
The film is written and directed by Stijn Bouma and is a coproduction between the Sarajevo Film Academy in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Alchemic Film in The Netherlands. The main parts are played by Lejla Hadžić, Vedad Terzić and Slobodan Čabaković.
